Demotion for Anti-social Tenant in Oakridge

26 May 2005 -

Sentinel Housing Group has been successful in bringing an anti-social tenant to justice. Sentinel was granted its first Demotion Order on an Oakridge tenant who had been causing problems to local residents through noise nuisance and by the rowdy behaviour of visitors to the property.

A Demotion Order removes some of the rights and security of the tenancy, meaning that continued anti-social behaviour could result in eviction proceedings. However, if there are no further complaints, the rights will be reinstated after 12 months.

Beth Holmyard, Neighbourhood Co-ordinator, said, "Demotion Orders are a really effective new power available to housing associations. They offer anti-social tenants a last chance to change their behaviour. If they chose not to do so, they face the real possibility of a quick eviction without any grounds to appeal."
