Sentinel gets go ahead to improve local facilities for older people

18 May 2006 -

Plans to extend a sheltered housing scheme in Hartley Wintney have been given the go ahead by Hart District Council.

As part of plans to modernise and enhance its accommodation for older people in the Hart District, Sentinel Housing Association will be building a 16-flat extension at its Rosefield Court sheltered housing scheme.

Rosefield Court will be the first of Sentinels sheltered housing schemes to be modernised as part of a major programme to review and improve its facilities for older people in line with the governmentҒs Decent Homes Standard. The project will see Sentinel providing more homes which are bigger, more suitable for people with disabilities and have the modern facilities needed for older people.

Following in-depth consultation with residents and local people and going through the detailed planning process, Sentinel was granted planning permission for the extension by Hart District Councils planning committee on Wednesday 17 May.

The extension at Rosefield Court, which is expected to be completed by the end of Summer 2007 will comprise 4 two-bedroom flats and 12 one-bedroom flats, each fitted with their own kitchen, bathroom and sitting room. The extension will also include a new lift, a room for charging mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs, level access showers, garden terraces and balconies. Flats will have built-in wardrobes and generous storage cupboards. Work is expected to start on site in the next three months and once complete the overall scheme will comprise 54 flats, 18 bungalows and two cottages.

Sentinels head of development and asset management, Julie Porter, said: ғWe are pleased that we can now progress with this scheme as part of our plans to build modern high-quality accommodation for the benefit of our residents and other older people in the Hart area, now and for the future.

Most of our present sheltered homes are bed-sit flats so where we build new homes, we want these to be a mix of larger one and two bedroom homes.  We know with sheltered housing that people want to stay in their own homes for longer and are moving into our homes at older ages when they are frailer and need more support and care.

ӓWe will be continuing to work with our residents to ensure they are consulted at every stage of the project and to ensure their needs are being met at all times.

The next scheme that Sentinel hopes to start work on is Campbell Close sheltered housing scheme in Fleet and following residents input, plans for the flat layouts are currently being put together. It is hoped that a planning application will be submitted in July 2006.

Sentinel values Investing in our homes and neighbourhoods to provide good places to live.
