Housing Association Lays Down The Law For Young People

12 December 2005 -

Young people dicing with the law recently learnt the stark reality of a life of crime thanks to a neighbourhood co-ordinator at Sentinel Housing, based in North Hampshire.

Neighbourhood co-ordinator Ben Williams recently took a group of young people who have been coming to his attention for all the wrong reasons to Coldingley prison in Woking, where prisoners have established a ‘crime diversion scheme’ aimed at young potential criminals.

The day included role play with the prisoners, most of whom are being punished for drug related offences but some are serving life sentences, testimonies from inmates about their lives and a detailed description of ‘a day in the life of a prisoner’.

Ben took the young people to the prison himself, which he said has its benefits: “I get to spend some time with these young residents, talking to them and building a good relationship with them.”

“The visit proved to be very enlightening to the people I took along, and they seem to have been affected by the visits in a positive way,” he said.
