JAN 2012 - Affordable homes boost for Basingstoke

We are pleased to announce that we have bought land in central Basingstoke to provide more much-needed affordable homes for local people and to regenerate the site.

We purchased the ‘Liverpool Victoria’ site in Kingsclere Road two weeks ago and are seeking to revamp the derelict land with a new housing development.

We already provide the vast majority of new affordable homes in Basingstoke & Deane, and the acquisition follows our successful regeneration of Oakridge Village, Bishops Green, Popley Poets and Popley Islands – where more than £100m of investment has seen 1200 new affordable homes over the last 10 years housing over 5000 people.

Our Chief Executive Martin Nurse said there were two reasons for buying the site,

“With thousands of families and people on the housing list waiting for a good home, it’s important for us to provide affordable homes for local people priced out of the rest of the property market.

“But we also want a much better designed development for the town centre to make it a thriving part of the community. We objected to the previous planning consent, and we know we can achieve a much better design by working with local people, to develop new homes that will make the area outstanding and attractive.”

We intend to involve neighbours and local residents and Councillors in the design of the site with consultation events and individual meetings starting in Spring 2012. It will be similar to the involvement of local people at the New Horizons Freemantle/Taverner regeneration currently taking place on the other side of Norden.

Martin Nurse added: “As a locally run organisation based just up the road from this site, we want to be a big part of  helping to make Basingstoke an even better place to live and work.”
