Sentinel Boredom Buster is even Bigger
North Hampshire’s biggest landlord has teamed up with Everest Community College in Basingstoke to help teenagers in the borough beat the boredom this summer.
‘Get With’ – started by Sentinel Housing Association in 2005 – provides the perfect antidote for teenage boredom. In Basingstoke, at Everest Community College there’s a choice of sports, hobbies or activities from street dancing, and football to cookery and junk sculpture. There’s even a Big Brother style diary room and an X Factor competition judged by local Kestrel Radio presenter Philip Hatto and it’s all free.
Dawn Purver, Get With Project Co-ordinator, at Everest Community College said: “It is fantastic to utilise the wonderful facilities that we have at the college for this programme. The interest of parents and children to date has been incredible and we are looking forward to a really successful summer programme. We are particularly pleased that we have been able to offer so many different elements to Get With this year.”
Last year, more than 1000 teenagers had a go at over 25 different free activities across Basingstoke, Hart and Rushmoor and this year there’s even more on offer at six different venues across north Hampshire.
Neighbourhood Manager Melissa Chapman explains: “Sentinel have changed this years programme to include more for older teens. Sixteen and 17 year olds can sign up for car maintenance, DIY or babysitting courses. We’ve teamed up with our repairs contractor MITIE for our own version of “DIY SOS”. Offering local teens a chance to learn a range of professional skills from the experts as they makeover a house in Popley, Basingstoke. They could even come away with an apprenticeship as MITIE are looking to take on two local teenagers as part of their apprenticeship programme.”
Get With starts on 27 July and runs until 21 August, activities take place at Everest Community College, Basingstoke; The Base, Hook, The Darby Centre, Yateley, Courtmoor School, Fleet, Connaught Campus, Aldershot and The Capricorn Youth Centre, Aldershot.
