Sentinel Housing unveils local talent

14 December 2007 -

Three young residents of Taverner and Freemantle Close in Oakridge, will have their art work on display at an unveiling ceremony on Friday 21 December.

The ‘Brighten A Stairwell’ competition was run by Sentinel Housing at a family fun day earlier this year. The winners were chosen by local resident Helen Parry, a member of Sentinels’ Consultative Group. Melissa Chapman, Sentinels’ Neighbourhood Manager for Oakridge said: ‘We wanted to find a way to brighten up the areas around the stairwells, as they can be quite dark and unwelcoming especially in the winter. These posters are really bright and cheerful and a great example of how local residents can help to make a difference to their neighbourhood.’

The official unveiling will be performed by local resident Brian Sanders, member of Sentinels’ Consultative Group. The winners will each receive a prize and a certificate and the event will be followed by coffee and mince pies.

Since January 2007 the Neighbourhood Team for the area have been involving local residents in a range of  initiatives to help make the neighbourhood a great place for people to live, work and play. Cleaning and Caretaking standards for the area have been developed in consultation with residents and these will also be displayed in the stairwell. A programme of ‘Pride in Your Place’ walkabouts with Sentinel staff, residents and local Councillors have helped to spot and resolve issues more quickly and a monthly newsletter helps to keep local residents informed.

Mrs Welham of Taverner Close Oakridge said: ‘I know more about what's going on here now and have started to see things change, like repairs and things. I definitely want to stay involved because I think things will get better.

Sentinel values Investing in our homes and neighbourhoods to provide good places to live.
