NOV 2010 - Clean sweep for Winklebury
WINKLEBURY CENTRE became a whirlwind of activity last week as staff from Sentinel Housing Association and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council teamed up to spruce up the outdoor area around the flats and shops.
In the latest in a series of estate clean-ups, the 12-strong team spent three days cutting hedges, clearing gutters, steam-cleaning paths, fitting cigarette bins and repainting road markings.
The ‘to do’ list was put together using local feedback collected through estate walkabouts and neighbourhood surveys, and we are now investigating costs for more upgrade work.
Winklebury Centre resident Lynne Loring said afterwards: “It’s so nice and clean. Now the trees and bushes have been cut back it’s made it easier to get about.”
Executive Director Val Bagnall said: “People often think of us as just a landlord, but we provide a lot of services that go beyond the doorstep. This work has really improved the look of Winklebury Centre, and we’re now looking at what else needs to happen to keep the area up to scratch for all residents, not just our customers.”
Cabinet Member for the Environment and Climate Change Cllr Elaine Still said: “The council is committed to ensuring that the borough is clean and tidy and people have pleasant areas to live.
“By working in partnership with Sentinel and local people, we believe we can achieve greater long-term results and solutions to keep areas clear of fly-tipping and graffiti, but communities need to ensure they also take pride in the areas they live in.”
