Preparing for a Tenancy

Getting a new home is very exciting. But with it comes a responsibility. You may be worried. We want your tenancy to be a success, and we will help you. If you have any worries, please ask us, and we will try and reassure you, give you good advice and, often, someone to help you.

Before you become our tenant, we will ask you questions and try and find out whether you will need support, so we can help you prepare.

If you need further support we can point you in the direction of other support agencies who can help.

Free Tenancy Training

We run course of a couple of hours at a time to help you learn about living independently for the first time.

They are run in very small groups by our partner, Stonham Housing Association.

If you would like to attend all or any of the courses, please discuss it with your Neighbourhood Co-ordinator. If you have not yet been offered a tenancy, we may still be able to offer you a place on the course.

Rent and Housing Benefit

Many people are concerned that they will not be able to afford the rent we charge. Although our rents are low, and in line with Government guidelines, we know that over half our residents need help paying their rent. Housing Benefit is paid by your District or Borough Council if they calculate your income is insufficient to pay your rent. Click on these links to find out more about Housing Benefit.

All of the above Council websites have Housing Benefit Calculators, so you can calculate your entitlement on-line.

If you live in Basingstoke, we can receive and check your Housing Benefit claim form when you sign up for your new home, and your Housing Benefit will be paid earlier.

Help and advice

If you want any advice about Housing Benefit, or need help with your application form, please ask us for help.  You can also go to the Council Offices or Citizens Advice Bureaux.

If, during your tenancy, you think you are going to fall behind with your rent, please contact us immediately, and we will provide or arrange appropriate advice or support.
