Gardeners celebrate the sweet smell of success

We celebrated the success of our green-fingered customers at an Awards Lunch on Friday 30 August at Popley Fields Community Centre.

We had a fantastic response to our annual gardening competition, which is now in its ninth year. The standard was exceptionally high and the judges had a tough job choosing the winners from all the gorgeous gardens, consummate containers, accomplished allotments and superlative sunflowers.

Congratulations went to; Mr D Cameron of Jefferson Road, Oakridge, who won 1st prize for both the Best Kept Small Garden and Best Vegetable Plot / Allotment categories, Mrs G McLellan of Wilmott Way, Winklebury, who retained her title for the Best Kept Medium / Large Garden, Mrs E Hayward of Moat Close, Bramley who scooped the 2nd prize in three categories (Best Kept Small Garden, Best Kept Medium / Large Garden and Best Planted Container) and the residents of Jean Orr Court, in Church Crookham, who claimed the Best Communal Garden crown for the second year running.

An extra special mention went to sisters Lilly and Mollie Beeson who claimed the 1st and joint 2nd  prizes respectively in the Tallest Sunflower competition with heights of 257cm and 247cm. Florence Scammell shared 2nd place and Oceiah Annesley-Gamester came 3rd with a sunflower measuring 200cm.

Richard Pilbeam, Customer & Community Involvement Co-ordinator,  who presented the awards said, “Well done to everyone who entered our gardening competition and especially to all those who won prizes. Keep up the good work and we hope you’ll all take part again next year. A special thank you goes to our partners, Lotus Landscapes, for their continued support in sponsoring the competition and for being part of the judging panel.”
